‘Just Mercy’ author Bryan Stevenson is keynote speaker April 4

Connecticut College welcomes to campus attorney Bryan Stevenson, founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, who will discuss his award-winning book, “Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption,” on Monday, April 4 at 7 p.m. in Palmer Auditorium. The talk is free and open to the public.

“Just Mercy” is this year’s One Book One Region selection for eastern Connecticut. Connecticut College partnered with One Book One Region this year, with students, faculty and staff joining local communities to read the book, present programming on related topics, and participate in local discussions throughout the region.

Stevenson’s Equal Justice Initiative is a nonprofit law organization that focuses on social justice and human rights in the context of criminal justice reform in the United States. Stevenson, who is also a professor of clinical law at New York University School of Law, was awarded the MacArthur Fellowship, often referred to as the "Genius" fellowship, in 1995. He is also the recipient of the Reebok Human Rights Award, the ACLU National Medal of Liberty, the Olaf Palme Prize and the Award for Courageous Advocacy.

Stevenson’s visit to campus will also launch President Katherine Bergeron’s new Distinguished Lecture Series. Stevenson’s talk will be the inaugural lecture, which will coincide with the College’s Founders Day celebration, planned for Tuesday, April 5.

Bergeron’s Distinguished Lecture Series will become an annual event, bringing to campus nationally and internationally prominent speakers to address topics of interest to the community on campus and in southeastern Connecticut.
