‘Labors of Love’
The Connecticut College men's lacrosse program is proud to host Kean University on Saturday, April 7, for a 1 p.m. game that will benefit the Women's Center of Southeastern Connecticut. Proceeds from t-shirt sales at the game will go to the center, which provides services to those affected by sexual assault and domestic violence. The team will also solicit donations from fans, who are asked to wear purple to the game to bring awareness to issues of domestic violence. Players from the Waterford Youth Lacrosse Association will play during halftime.
"We cultivated a relationship with the Women's Center in the fall and we're excited to support them in any fashion we can," said Head Coach Dave Cornell. "They provide a wonderful service that literally saves lives. Although I know the center is thankful for our support, it's our student-athletes who have benefitted from the relationship, by witnessing firsthand what caring can do."
Clay Hillyer '12, a captain of the squad, recognizes the importance of contributing to the Women's Center. "Being able to help such a worthy cause is a humbling experience for the team," Hillyer said. "We have been afforded a great blessing in life and part of being lucky enough to find ourselves where we are - students and varsity athletes at Connecticut College - is to take the opportunity to give back to the less fortunate wherever the need arises. Working with the Women's Center in the fall was an extraordinary experience and we hope to make a significant positive impact for those in need with our efforts on Saturday."
Darcie Folsom, the College's coordinator of sexual violence education and advocacy, serves on the board of the Women's Center and applauds the team's efforts. "Members of the team have been volunteering for the Women's Center and learning about its mission, and this game is a great opportunity for them to create awareness in the greater community about what the center does." The game will take place on the Artificial Turf at Silfen Field. Parking and admission are free.
