Musical spells F-U-N on campus

Connecticut College's Wig and Candle theater company will stage the Tony award-winning musical "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" on campus, Oct. 18-20. Hilarious and touching, with a score that mixes musical theater with pop, "Spelling Bee" has been winning fans since debuting on Broadway in 2005. It tells the story of six middle school students, all enduring their own insecurities, as they compete to win a county spelling bee facilitated by three adults with their own issues. "All nine performers have worked very hard to make this show a success," said Christophe Desorbay '15, who co-directs the production with Terilyn Eisenhauer '15. "The dedication they've shown is incredible and their talents reach far beyond what you might expect from a student production. And there is never a dull moment. There are jokes, improvisation, fantastic music, dancing and quick costume changes. Audience members will also have the opportunity to become spellers and try to win the bee. And it's free!" Performances of "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" are at 7:30 p.m. in Oliva Hall in Cummings Arts Center, from Thursday, Oct. 18 to Saturday, Oct. 20. Admission is free and open to the public. In addition to Wig and Candle, the production is co-sponsored by the Connecticut College Student Activities Council and the Department of Theater.
