New exhibition showcases work of Swedish artists inspired by Linnaeus
Artwork inspired by the life and work of 18th-century Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus will be featured in a new exhibit at Connecticut College. "Systema Naturae: The Order of Nature," will showcase the work of Swedish artists Carina Fihn and Berit Jonsvik. The exhibition, curated by Connecticut College Professor of Art Andrea Wollensak, will be on display in the Cummings Arts Center Galleries Oct. 31 -Dec. 7. There will be a public lecture Nov. 6 at 4:15 p.m. in Cummings Arts Center Room 308, followed by an artist reception at 5:15 p.m. All events are free and open to the public. Fihn and Jonsvik employ a wide range of expressive media - including artist books, photography, drawing, printmaking and video - to pay homage to Linnaeus, who is best known for creating systems for naming and classifying plants and animals. Their thoughtful and playful work will be complemented by a special exhibition of plant specimens from Connecticut College's Charles B. Graves Herbarium. Also on display will be the results of a collaborative student workshop being taught at the College by the two artists. This exhibition and the associated activities were made possible with funding from the Sherman Fairchild Foundation and the College's Dayton Artist-in-Residency program.
