'New London Calling' to screen on campus

The Connecticut College Staff Council will host a screening of the award-winning short film "New London Calling" on Thursday, Feb. 23, at 4 p.m. in Evans Hall, Cummings Arts Center. The film was produced by Rob Richter, an alumnus and the College's director of arts programming, as part of the College's Dayton Artist-in-Residence Program. "New London Calling" follows dozens of children playing games throughout the city -- outside, unsupervised and unencumbered by the rules of the adult world -- and laments the loss of spontaneous, creative play by today's children. The 10-minute film has been shown at more than 40 film festivals in North and South America, Europe, the Middle East and Australia. It has won the Director's Choice Award at the Black Maria Festival in Newark, N.J.; the Applause from the Adult Jury Award at the Young About Film Festival in Bologna, Italy; and the Garland of Honor at the 29th Milano International FICTS Festival in Milan, Italy. The subject matter resonated even with the international audiences. "The director has gotten comments around the world about kids at computers all the time, playing computer games, not going outside and playing and socializing," Richter said. Richter will introduce the film and answer questions after the screening. To view other events on campus this month, visit the Connecticut College calendar of events.
