onStage at Connecticut College presents the Brentano String Quartet Feb. 17
In celebration of its 20th season, the Brentano String Quartet will bring its newest program, "Fragments: Connecting Past and Present," to Connecticut College on Friday, Feb. 17. The performance, part of the onStage at Connecticut College series, is at 8 p.m. in Evans Hall, Cummings Arts Center. For this innovative production, called "an excellent performance" by the Boston Globe, the Quartet selected six incomplete compositions from legends of the past and invited six present-day composers to create new pieces in the spirit of the original music. Pairings include Bach (1685-1750) and Sofia Gubaidulina (b. 1931), and Mozart (1756-1791) and Vijay Iyer (b. 1971), and the Quartet will perform both the classical and contemporary works. This program was commission by Connecticut College, the Caramoor Center for the Arts, Carnegie Hall, Chamber Music Northwest and others. Since it was established in 1992, the Brentano Quartet has toured throughout the world, receiving extensive praise and playing in such well-known venues as Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House. Mark Steinberg (violin), Serena Canin (violin), Misha Amory (viola) and Nina Marie Lee (cello) make up the group.
