onStage at Connecticut College to kick off season with 'Cherish New London' fundraiser
onStage at Connecticut College will kick off the 2012-2013 season with an Oct. 6 performance by Irish music ensemble Cherish the Ladies to benefit the arts in New London. All proceeds from the performance, which is at 8 p.m. in Palmer Auditorium, will be donated to the Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut to benefit arts organizations in New London. "Connecticut College is honored to be part of New London, and this is just one more way we can contribute to the vibrancy of our host city," President Leo I. Higdon Jr. said. With their unique blend of virtuosi instrumental talents, beautiful vocals, captivating arrangements and stunning step dancing, Cherish the Ladies is at the center of the Celtic music craze sweeping the country. This all-female traditional Irish band is the most successful and sought-after Irish-American Celtic music group, known for immensely humorous and entertaining performances. The New York Times has called the group's music "passionate, tender and rambunctious." "Cherish the Ladies is a perfect example of the high caliber performing artists the onStage series brings to the area on a regular basis," Rob Richter, director of arts programming, said. "These artists come from a variety of cultural backgrounds and perspectives and offer performances that inspire, exhilarate and challenge our audiences." Tickets are $28 for general admission, $25 for seniors and $14 for students. One hour prior to the performance, the College will host a free dessert reception with entertainment in Castle Court, adjacent to Palmer Auditorium. Connecticut College students will provide the entertainment, and Mitchell College hospitality and tourism majors will help with the reception and serve as ushers for the performance. Other highlights of the 2012-2013 onStage season include "Tell Me Something Good," an Oct. 19 concert by ETHEL with special guest Todd Rundgren; a Nov. 3 performance of "Trojan Women (After Euripides)" by the SITI Company; Haitian singer and songwriter BélO on Nov. 9; "Come, and Back Again," by David Dorfman Dance on Feb. 8; So Percussion on Feb. 22 and jazz pianist Alfredo Rodriguez on April 5.
