Professor to screen new documentary on race and citizenship

Professor of French will screen her new documentary, "Afro Diasporic French Identities," on Thursday, April 12, at 7 p.m. in Room 014 of Olin Science Center. The documentary is the result of a research project Etoke began in 2010 in which she studied the relationship between race and citizenship in the specifically French sociopolitical context. She interviewed writers, artists, professors and community organizers who investigate this issue of race and identity in France and, with funding from Connecticut College, wrote and directed the film. "I focus on the stigmatization of 'the other' and observation of color through a narrow lens," said Etoke. While the genesis of the film is a course she teaches on race and ethnicity in France, the film intended to appeal to anyone interested in race relations of any sort. "This event will be a resource not only for my students, but also for colleagues and students from other disciplines who are interested in analyzing the racial question from a comparative, transnational and interdisciplinary point of view," said Etoke. One of the artists featured in the film will participate in a roundtable discussion after the screening. The screening is free and open to the public.
