The Department of Film Studies presents the Fall 2014 Student Film Exhibition on Thursday, Dec. 11, at 7 p.m. in Room 014 of Olin Science Center.
The exhibition will feature the best work — including fiction, documentary and experimental pieces — from student filmmakers at currently enrolled in one of two classes, “Documentary Theory” and “Production and Fundamentals of Motion Picture Production.” Even in those introductory level filmmaking classes, students are showing their potential as filmmakers and storytellers of the future, according to Assistant Professor of Film Studies Ross Morin.
“The work typically challenges conventions of filmic storytelling in ways that are exploratory of both form and content,” said Morin. “The films this year are fun, deep, honest and exciting. One of my favorite things about these films is that they engage people from across campus and within the New London/Groton community. The fiction films star students from a diverse range of majors, and the non-fiction films reach out beyond the College gates.”
Among the films to be screened are a poetic documentary about the Seaside Sanatorium in Waterford and a film that appears to be about Legos, the toy building blocks, but which has deeper implications for race and discrimination in our culture.
“Through their films, these students have sought to challenge and explore their identities culturally and psychologically,” Morin said. “The films demonstrate the type of awareness and insight that we hope our students gain here at the College.
