Students plan 7th annual Walk for the Homeless
For the seventh year in a row, students at Connecticut College have organized Walk for the Homeless, a benefit for the New London Homeless Hospitality Center (NLHHC). The two-mile walk will start at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 27, beginning and ending at 325 Huntington Street.
The NLHHC provides shelter and support services for hundreds of people in Southeastern Connecticut who need temporary or long-term assistance. Many Connecticut College students volunteer at the center, some as part of their scholarship in the Holleran Center for Community Action and Public Policy, a multidisciplinary academic center that advances teaching, learning, research and collaboration in order to create more just and equitable communities.
The Holleran Center scholars organized the walk, which is the final event held in celebration of the Inauguration of the College’s new president, Katherine Bergeron.
“The walk is an important part of the Inauguration, because it is a statement to the sort of community unification that President Bergeron is committed to ensuring during her time as president,” said Kristina Harrold ’16, one of the walk organizers. “It speaks to the awareness and advocacy that will be fostered during the next century at Connecticut College.”
In addition to the fundraising walk, participants will enjoy performances by College musical groups Miss Connduct and Vox Cameli, yoga instruction, and a health fair offering information about lifestyle tips and wellness resources in the area.
Last year, a record 500 people marched in the walk and raised $15,000 for NLHHC. The students hope to raise more this year.
