The play Cloud 9—a comedic satire—comes to Conn College

Cloud 9 is a searing political satire by British playwright Caryl Churchill where members of a white British family of the ruling class in Africa lose their hold on Victorian codes of conduct as they get swallowed up by the damage and violence of colonialism and sexual repression.

The play will be staged at Tansill Theater, Connecticut College, on Nov. 20, 21 at 7:30 p.m. and November 21, 22 at 2 p.m.

As the play progresses, the family makes a fantastical jump to London a hundred years later, but are only twenty-five years older. Sexual liberation and a lack of patriarchal certitude keep the characters spinning as they try to inhabit new definitions of identity and family.

“It will rock your world with its provocations and unpredictability as it pushes our faulty logic about what we think we know is right about gender and sexuality, patriarchy, feminisms and queer theory to new outcomes," says Gabrielle Schlein ‘18, theater department publicist.

Every cast member plays two or more roles. Student performers include Brittany Baltay '16, Mattie Barber-Bockelman '16, assistant director Teresa Cruz '16, Aidan Gorrell '18, assistant stage manager Catherine Healey '18; Ramzi Kaiss '18, Jason Karos '18; stage manager Eva Murray '17, David Socolar '16, Leise Trueblood '16, Charlotte Weber '16 and Emma Weisberg '16.

Theater department faculty involved in the production include director Kenneth Prestininzi; costume designer Sabrina Notarfrancisco, scenic designer Edward Morris, and theater technical director, Rodney Dumond. Guest artists include Daisy Long, light design and Robert Frost, singing coach.
