A core function of the ARC is working with students to develop time management skills, including academic obligations, extracurricular & social activities, and activities of daily living. Students working with a learning specialist can expect to review course syllabi for important due dates and to create weekly and/or semester-long calendars to stay organized. ARC staff collaborate with many campus partners such as Student Accessibility Services and the library to connect students with other learning tools and resources as well.
Executive functioning skills are not innate, but are learned behaviors. These skills are honed in tandem with the development of the frontal lobe, the largest part of the brain, and the last to mature. Executive functioning skills are broad and include skills such as task initiation and completion, self-monitoring, metacognition, problem-solving, and the ability to shift between the various roles required of college students. By working with a learning specialist, students can develop executive functioning skills in a non-judgmental and supportive environment.
