The mathematics department offers many distinctive opportunities and organizes programs throughout the academic year to enhance the experience of our students.
Math Help Center
The Math Help Center provides an opportunity for students enrolled in introductory or intemediate mathematics courses to receive assistance from specially trained mathematics majors. In the fall of 2013, the Help Center is open Sunday through Thursday evenings from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. On Sundays, Mondays, and Wednesdays, the Help Center meets in Fanning 313; on Tuesdays and Thursdays it meets in the facilities of the Academic Resource Center in Main Street West.
Pi Mu Epsilon
Connecticut College is proud to have a chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, the national mathematics honor society. Membership is offered to our strongest junior and senior mathematics majors, as well as to exceptionally accomplished sophomores.
Mathematics Seminar
The department has a weekly seminar series, featuring talks by faculty or guest speakers during the first part of the semester and talks by junior or senior majors during the latter part.
Mathematics Competitions
Students have the opportunity to participate throughout the year in a variety of mathematical competitions and contests:
- Every fall the department organizes an Integrating Bee, a calculus-based contest for students at all levels.
- Every spring the department organizes the Connecticut Collegiate Mathematics Competition, a more involved competition for intermediate and advanced students.
- The department regularly fields a team for the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition. Open to undergraduates at colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada, the examination is designed to test originality as well as technical competence.
- The department also offers the opportunity to participate in such contests as the Mathematical Competition in Modeling (MCM), the Virginia Tech Regional Mathematics Contest, and the Michigan Autumn Take Home (MATH) Challenge.
