Connecticut College earns distinguished spot on President's Community Service Honor Roll
Connecticut College is the only Connecticut school named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction, in recognition of extraordinary volunteer efforts by the college and its students.
"This honor acknowledges Connecticut College's culture of community service, in which we educate students to be active, engaged citizens," said Connecticut College President Leo I. Higdon Jr. "Our students, faculty and staff are committed to our mission of putting the liberal arts into action - in our local community, across the country and throughout the world."
Connecticut College was among 83 higher education institutions to earn a place on the "Honor Roll with Distinction" list, which was announced today. Another 546 institutions were named to the Honor Roll.
Tracee Reiser, director of Connecticut College's Office of Volunteers for Community Service, said dedicated students, staff and faculty work together to identify serious community challenges and institute creative solutions.
"Through our projects and programs, we bring needed change to the community," Reiser said. "Our work is resulting in cleaner environments, improved academics and increased physical fitness and health."
The President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, launched in 2006 by the Corporation for National and Community Service, recognizes colleges and universities nationwide that support innovative and effective community service and service-learning programs. Honorees for the award were chosen based on a series of selection factors including scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.
"In this time of economic distress, we need volunteers more than ever," said Stephen Goldsmith, vice chair of the Board of Directors of the Corporation for National and Community Service. "We salute Connecticut College for making community service a campus priority."
The Corporation for National and Community Service is a federal agency that improves lives, strengthens communities and fosters civic engagement through service and volunteering. The Corporation administers Senior Corps, AmeriCorps and Learn and Serve America, a program that supports service-learning in schools, institutions of higher education and community-based organizations.
