OnStage at Connecticut College to preview ´New London Calling´ Feb. 5
NEW LONDON, Conn. - OnStage at Connecticut College is proud to preview Kinodance Company´s "New London Calling," a film featuring 75 local students from New London´s Dual Language Arts Academy, Feb. 5 at 8 p.m. in Palmer Auditorium. The preview will be followed by the company´s theatrical dance performance, "Denizen." "New London Calling" is an unscripted movement-based film that chronicles the young performers taking over the city of New London, playing unsupervised street games and creating rites and rituals. Their performance creates a sense of hope for the future but also a longing for the glorious past. "New London Calling" was filmed in September of 2009 as part of Connecticut College´s 2009 - 2010 Dayton Artist-in-Residence Program, a program that brings artists to the college to give the students the opportunity to further explore various artistic approaches and techniques. The preview will be immediately followed by a performance of "Denizen," which is also a part of the college´s in-residence program. The performance features five dancers, who each embody a distinct personality influenced by the mythical and ritualistic qualities of Armenia. A film, inspired by Armenian cinema and shot in Armenia, accompanies the dance performance "to create a theatrical experience with enormous dramatic impact." "The layering of emotionally potent choreography, exotic imagery, sounds, and staging add up to a daring and dramatically theatrical experience," The Boston Globe said of "Denizen." Kinodance Company is a Boston-based artist collaborative that merges dance, film and visual art. Kinodance was named one of the top 25 companies to watch in 2008 by "Dance Magazine." Tickets are $22, $18 and $15 for general admission; $20, $16 and $13.50 for seniors; and $11, $9 and $7.50 for students.
