Connecticut College to celebrate Asian-Pacific Islander Heritage Month in April

In 2010, President Barack Obama established a month-long celebration to commemorate the history and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. This year, Connecticut College will observe Asian-Pacific Islander (API) Heritage Month in April with several events to mark the occasion. The first, a convocation, brings together Harris Vu '14, Kasey Lum '11 and Jean Wong '73, associate professor of special education, language and literacy at The College of New Jersey, to discuss their experiences while students at Connecticut College. The API convocation is Monday, April 4, at 7 p.m. in the 1941 Room at the College Center at Crozier-Williams.

Future API Heritage Month events include an April 7 screening of "Wo Ai Ni Mommy" ("I Love You Mommy"), which will be followed by a Q&A with the film's director, and an April 26 lecture - "Asian Americans and Education in the U.S." - by Oiyan Poon, a scholar at the Institute for Asian American Studies at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. API Heritage Month events at Connecticut College are sponsored by the Center for the Comparative Study of Race and Ethnicity, Alumni Relations, the and Race and Ethnicity Programs at Unity House, the College's multicultural center. All are free and open to the public.
