Connecticut College is happy to welcome David Barber '88 back to campus to deliver a talk entitled "Slow Food Meets Big Business." This will be his second speaking engagement at his alma mater: Last year, Barber delivered "Is a Sustainable Food System Realistic?" to a rapt, standing-room-only audience.
Barber is a sustainable food entrepreneur, the co-owner of Blue Hill Farm in Great Barrington, Mass. and Blue Hill Restaurant in Greenwich Village (the site of a well-known 2009 presidential date night for the Obamas). He also co-founded and serves on the board of directors of the Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture, a non-profit farm and education center in Tarrytown, N.Y., where a second Blue Hill restaurant is located.
In his 2010 talk, Barber discussed issues including worldwide water scarcity, barren soil and an epidemic of obesity and diabetes, linking all of them to agriculture's overdependence on monocultures, irrigation, pesticides and petroleum-based fertilizers. His take on slow food - endorsed as an alternative to fast food and as a means of preserving traditional and regional cuisine - is eagerly anticipated by the campus community. Barber, also a Trustee of the College, will speak on Friday, Feb. 11, at 4 p.m. in Room 210 of the Blaustein Humanities Center. The event is free and open to the public.
