The Department of Music will host 15 performances during the month of April, featuring talented students, faculty, alumni and guests covering a wide range of genres and styles.
“This is one of the busiest and most exciting times of the year for us, as our music students begin to present final performances that demonstrate their hard work throughout the year,” said Midge Thomas, associate professor and chair of the music department. “The bonus for the campus and local communities is that there is a rich array of opportunities to see some wonderful live music.”

Flute Master Class with Katherine Hoover
Flute students perform for acclaimed flutist, composer and conductor Katherine Hoover, whose work has been performed by orchestras and symphonies across the country. Hoover has also received many honors, including a National Endowment Composer’s Fellowship, a composition award from the Academy of Arts and Letters, and the National Flute Association’s Newly Published Music Competition.

Senior Recital with Emily Arner ’14, voice
Senior vocalist Emily Arner performs classical and jazz repertoire with Patrice Newman, piano, and the Connecticut College Traditional Jazz Band.

Senior Recital with Philip Pacelli ’14, voice
Senior vocalist Philip Pacelli performs solo and chamber works with Adjunct Instructor of Music Patrice Newman on piano and vocal assistance from Ashley Pacelli ’15 and Co Co Beaux, the College's only all-male a cappella group.

Classic Jazz Duo: John Clark ’90 and Jeff Barnhart ’89
With the support of the Dayton Artist-in-Residence Grant, alumni musicians Jeff Barnhart (piano) and John Clark (woodwinds) will recapture their Connecticut College youth in a program spanning jazz from 1900 to 1950. Barnhart tours internationally with the Titan Hot Seven, Ivory and Gold, and as a piano soloist while Clark performs nationally with his Wolverine Jazz Band. Their program will include music by Jelly Roll Morton, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, George Gershwin, Fats Waller and others.

Senior violinist Ben Jiang performs solo works with Adjunct Instructor of Music Patrice Newman and Brendan Burns ’15, both on piano.

Senior Recital with Andy Stein-Zeller ’14, guitar
Senior guitarist and composer Andy Stein Zeller performs solo classical and modern guitar works, along with original compositions. Guest artists include dancer Aaron Davis ’14 and music faculty Patrice Newman (piano), Theodore Arm (violin), Thomas Labadorf (clarinet) and Gunnar Hansen (vibraphone).

“The Hounds of Spring” Concert Band Performance
The Connecticut College Concert Band, directed by Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music Gary Buttery, presents a musical celebration of the spring season. Tickets are $5 for general admission, $3 for students and seniors, and free to Connecticut College students, staff and faculty.

Jazz in the Courtyard
Under the direction of Gary Buttery, adjunct assistant professor of music , the Connecticut College Jazz Ensemble and Traditional Jazz Band present their annual outdoor concert.

“Vive l’Amour – Live and Love” Choral Concert
The spring choral concert will feature the Connecticut College Chamber Choir and the smaller ensemble Camel Heard, presenting music by Virgil Thompson, Leonard Bernstein and other composers, under the direction of Assistant Professor of Music . Tickets are $5 for general admission, $3 for students and seniors, and free to Connecticut College students, staff and faculty.
