The Connecticut College departments of Theater and Music present "Bat Boy: The Musical," a theatrical take on the life of a half-human, half-bat character created by the now-defunct tabloid Weekly World News. The show runs Thursday, March 1, through Sunday, March 4, in Tansill Theater. Introduced in 1992, Bat Boy's popularity in the magazine led to the development of the play by The Actors' Gang Theater in 1997 and its off-Broadway debut in 2001. The show has since run in London's West End, the Edinburgh Festival and many other theatrical venues around the world. In the musical, Bat Boy is discovered in a cave in Hope Falls, W. Va., and taken in by the wife of a local veterinarian. While Weekly World News headlines proclaimed him "hungry for terror," the play portrays him as hungry for love and acceptance as he learns the ways and emotions of the civilized world. "His curiosity leads the town of Hope Falls to some unexpected and harrowing discoveries," said Peter Deffet, the director of the college's production. "In the end, hopefully, the audience will identify not just with the Bat Boy, but with everyone in Hope Falls who has been subject to the wonder and horror that he has brought from the shadows." Performances are at 8 p.m. March 1 - 3, with matinee performances at 2 p.m. on March 3 and 4. Tickets are $12 for general admission and $8 for Connecticut College students. For more information, call 860-439-2605. To view other events on campus this month, visit the Connecticut College calendar of events.
