College celebrates Black History Month with convocation

Connecticut College will kick off Black History Month celebrations with a convocation on Monday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m. in the 1941 Room of The College Center at Crozier-Williams. The convocation, "Illuminating Black Culture," will feature a performance of West African dance, a multimedia production, a spoken word performance and presentations by students Tonesha Hunt '12 and Metika Ngbokoli '15 as well as alumna Catherine "Cay" Young '75. Young is the longtime manager of the Groton-New London Airport whose career has taken her from the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Melanie Pagan, assistant director of Race and Ethnicity Programs at Unity House, the College's multicultural center and one of the event sponsors, said, "We're so pleased with the program for the convocation because it reflects the passion of the students, alumni and Unity House staff who worked hard to produce it. And it represents well the vibrant intellectual and cultural pursuits for which the College is known. It's a great opportunity to share those pursuits with our neighbors in the community." The convocation is free and open to the public. In addition to Unity House, it is sponsored by the Office of Alumni Relations and the Center for the Comparative Study of Race and Ethnicity.
