Enjoy 'An Afternoon of Brass'

The Department of Music presents "An Afternoon of Brass with The New London Brass Quintet" on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 1 p.m. in Evans Hall, Cummings Arts Center. The quintet, all members of the U.S. Coast Guard Band, includes Connecticut College Adjunct Music Instructor Tom Brown on trumpet, Adam Crowe on tuba, Vince Yanovitch on trombone, Matt Muehl-Miller on French horn and Longino Villarreal on trumpet. They'll perform Ingolf Dahl's "Music For Brass Instruments," Andre Previn's "Four Outings for Brass" and Enrique Crespo's "Suite Americana." The quintet selected their program carefully, choosing Ingolf Dahl's piece because it highlights the exciting nature of a brass quintet with fanfares flourishes. The Previn piece was selected for the program because it features some of the hardest tuba music written for a brass ensemble. And the Crespo piece features songs that cover many countries in the Americas. "It finishes with a blazing Mexican dance that is sure to increase the blood pressure," said Brown. "Members of the New London Brass Quintet have performed in many of the world's greatest concert halls and have dedicated our lives to the art of playing brass instruments," he continued. "This concert marks the third annual performance we have given at Connecticut College and it features a program that showcases many different styles of music and it is sure to offer something for everybody. We feel this program is especially appropriate for Connecticut College because it features music that is sure to be stimulating both intellectually and emotionally." A reception will follow the concert. Tickets are $10 for general admission, $5 for seniors and students, and free for Connecticut College students, staff and faculty.
