Lecture to focus on ethics and animals

The Goodwin-Niering Center for the Environment (GNCE) and the Department of Philosophy present "Ethics and Animals: The Importance of Empathy," a lecture by Lori Gruen, on Thursday, March 29, at 7 p.m. in Ernst Common Room of Blaustein Humanities Center. Gruen, a professor of philosophy, environmental studies and feminist, gender and sexuality studies at Wesleyan University, has been involved in animal issues as a writer, teacher and activist for more than 25 years. She has recently published a book, "Ethics and Animals: An Introduction" (Cambridge, 2011). In her thought-provoking talk, Gruen will explore traditional approaches to thinking about our ethical obligations to other animals, identifying intrinsic properties we share with them and reasoning about the value of possessing such properties. "We're really pleased to have Lori deliver this year's Lambert lecture," said Derek Turner, associate professor of philosophy and a GNCE fellow. "Her unique perspective comes from years working with scholars, activists and many different animals, and she's a powerful force in urging humans to look more critically and empathetically at our treatment of other animals."
