The Connecticut College Department of Music has gathered three ensembles for a concert titled “March Winds and Abstract Shades of Blue” on Wednesday, March 6, at 7 p.m. in Evans Hall of Cummings Arts Center.
Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music Gary Buttery, who will direct the program, thinks the songs to be performed will appeal to New Englanders tiring of winter.
“The pieces just seemed to fit the season, coming out of the snow, and soon — hopefully! — into spring,” Buttery said. “The first part of the concert is performed by the Concert Band Chamber Ensemble, featuring the classics of Schubert and Brahms as well as two student soloists, Avery Yurman ’13 on bassoon and Emily Verschoor-Kirss ’15 on alto saxophone. The Traditional Jazz Band and Jazz Ensemble perform on the second half of the program, each with a varied program, but emphasizing the 'blues,' either in the title or in the genre of music.”
Some of those selections include “Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea,” “Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans?” and “When Sunny Gets Blue.”
Tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for seniors and students. The concert is free for Connecticut College staff, faculty and students. For more information, call 860-439-2720.
