Music department presents 'Art of the Jazz Duo'

The Connecticut College Department of Music presents "Art of the Jazz Duo," a concert by bass player Mark McCormick, an adjunct assistant professor, and popular jazz pianist Kent Hewitt, on Friday, Nov. 16, at 7:30 p.m. in Evans Hall. "Not only is this a duo concert highlighting the great sounds of the piano/bass duo, but Kent Hewitt and I decided to prominently feature two great American composers: Duke Ellington and Henry Mancini," McCormick said. "The music of these two great musicians has greatly influenced the both of us. Thus the choice of music." Among the pieces they'll perform are Ellington's "Do Nothing 'Til You Hear From Me" and Mancini's "Mr. Lucky" and the theme to "Peter Gunn." "This is sure to be a wonderful evening of jazz in varied styles, performed by two players who interact beautifully in the jazz idiom," said Midge Thomas, associate professor and chair of the music department. "Kent is widely in demand as a jazz pianist; he's recorded and performed with such musicians as Randy Brecker, Ray Drummond, Claudio Roditi, Thomas Chapin, Clark Terry, Phil Woods, Kenny Burrell, Chet Baker, Jackie McLean, Steve Rossi, Jon Hendricks and Cassandra Wilson. Not only is Mark a gifted bass teacher who truly inspires his students, but he is also a first-rate performer. He performs widely throughout New England, and he is also the bassist for the U.S. Coast Guard Band." Tickets are available at the door.
