Music faculty showcase presents provocative, reflective program
The Connecticut College Department of Music presents “Looking Forward/Looking Back: Musical Reflections,” a performance by members of the music faculty and guest musicians, on Friday, Feb. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Evans Hall.
The 19 performers will present works that are both forward-looking and reflective, in a program that will inspire listeners to draw connections between contemporary and earlier music. Works include two virtuosic solo piano works by Maurice Ravel, “Pavane pour une infant défunte” and “Ondine,” Conlon Nancarrow’s delightful Trio No. 2 for oboe, bassoon, and piano, John Adams’s exhilarating “Son of Chamber Symphony,” a work for sixteen performers to be conducted by Assistant Professor , Robert Pollock’s “Metaphor for Vibraphone,” and Kamillo Lendvay’s “Five Movements in Quotation Marks” for brass trio. Throughout this provocative program, the audience will experience the power of music to make reference, both to other musical works and to extra-musical factors.
Associate Professor of Music and Chair of the Music Department Midge Thomas praised both the program and the performers.
"To select pieces that will encourage the audience to draw connections among musical works from different eras — and different genres — is a stroke of brilliant programming,” she said. “And these are incredibly talented musicians playing incredibly difficult music, so I think we're all in for a treat.”
Tickets are $10 for general admission, $5 for seniors and students, free to Connecticut College staff, faculty and students. They can be purchased at the door or in advance at the box office in Palmer Auditorium. For more information, call 860-439-ARTS (2787).
