Music in May

May is a musical month at Connecticut College, with an array of events presented by the Department of Music. Many are free - prices are listed for events requiring tickets - and all are open to the public. •May 2: "Student Recital," 5 p.m., Fortune Recital Hall, Cummings Arts Center. •May 3: "Connecticut College Orchestra Concert," with the Connecticut College Chamber Choir and Jordan Hillman '13 on piano, conducted by Assistant Professor of Music , 7 p.m., Evans Hall, Cummings Arts Center. Tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for students and seniors. •May 4: "Jazz in the Courtyard," a performance by Connecticut College's Jazz Ensemble and Traditional Jazz Band, who will be joined by the Show Choir. Conducted by Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music Gary Buttery, 4 p.m., Castle Court, Cummings Arts Center. The rain location for this free event is Evans Hall, Cummings Arts Center. •May 6: "A Night at the Pops! - Connecticut College Concert Band," featuring movie's most beloved characters. Conducted by Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music Gary Buttery, 7 p.m., Evans Hall, Cummings Arts Center. Tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for students and seniors. •May 7: "Connecticut College New Music and Percussion Ensemble in Concert," celebrating the centennial of composer John Cage. Directed by Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music Gunnar Hansen, 7 p.m., Evans Hall, Cummings Arts Center. Tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for students and seniors. •May 8: "Charles Shackford Memorial Student Composers Concert," featuring works composed by Connecticut College students, directed by Arthur Kreiger, the Sylvia Pasternack Marx Professor of Music at Connecticut College, 6:30 p.m., Evans Hall, Cummings Arts Center.
