On March 31, onStage at Connecticut College will present AXIS Dance Company in a performance that will forever change the way you think about the possibilities of the human body. One of the world's most innovative ensembles of performers with and without disabilities, AXIS Dance Company will perform at 8 p.m. in Palmer Auditorium. "Audiences unaccustomed to seeing such inventive movement generated from what could be considered limitation may find themselves re-evaluating their own ideas of artistic perfection," reviewer Lucia Mauro wrote in The Chicago Tribune. The performance will feature the company's newest work, "Full of Words" by Marc Brew, as well as "Light Shelter," a piece the company commissioned David Dorfman, professor of dance and chair of the Dance Department at Connecticut College, to create in 2009. Dorfman said he was inspired by the AXIS dancers he had the opportunity to "rub elbows and wheels" with during the composition of "Light Shelter." "The dance's title, to me, is indicative of what I thought of our time together - a shelter for a moment from the world - from the harshness of life - and a chance to make a world on stage that was a bit more gentle and yet completely full of life," he said. Tickets are $28, $24 and $20 for general admission; $25, $21.50 and $18 for seniors; and $14, $12 and $10 for students. (Discounts are available for Connecticut College faculty and staff.) For tickets and information, call (860) 439-ARTS or visit onstage.conncoll.edu. The presentation of AXIS Dance is funded in part by the National Dance Project (NDP) of the New England Foundation for the Arts. NDP is supported by lead funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, with additional funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Community Connections Fund of MetLife Foundation and the Boeing Company Charitable Trust. OnStage at Connecticut College is presented with support from The National Endowment for the Arts, New England Foundation for the Arts, The Day Publishing Company and Chubb and Son.
