The Three-Cornered Hat: an orchestra concert May 5
Suite No. 1 from The Three-Cornered Hat, a ballet by the Spanish composer Manuel de Falla, is one of the selections to be performed in by the Connecticut College Orchestra in concert on May 5 at 7 p.m. in Evans Hall.
The event is open to the public, and tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for seniors and students. Admission is free to Connecticut College students, staff and faculty.
The concert, led by conductor Mark Seto, will open with a pair of American selections: Aaron Copland's "Our Town," from the 1940 film score based on Thornton Wilder's play of the same name, and the first movement of Samuel Barber's "Violin Concerto" (1939), which will feature a solo by Will Platt '19. The "Three Cornered Hat" suite follows, paired with another work inspired by Spain, Emmanuel Chabrier's "Habanera."
The Department of Music's program offers students the choice of two different majors (music major or music & technology major) and four different concentrations, as well as a teaching certificate program in music education. It offers applied instruction (private music lessons) on any orchestral or band instrument, as well as classical guitar, voice, harp, piano, organ, harpsichord, jazz piano, jazz clarinet and jazz saxophone. Lesson fees are waived, thanks to the generosity of the Jack Niblack ’98 Music Lessons Fund. Students must audition for lessons, demonstrating at least a moderate facility with their instrument.
