The State Fire Marshal's Office and the New London Fire Department have specific requirements pertaining to events.

First, a permit is required from the City of New London Building Official's Office for the erection of any tent larger than 10 x 20 (200 square feet). Additional information can be obtained by calling (860) 477-5240. It is the responsibility of the tent company, or organization/office erecting the tent to obtain this permit. Permit applications must be made at least 5 working days prior to the event. An inspection of the tent by the Fire Marshall's Office is initiated by the the building permit application.

Detailed information on fire safety requirements for tents can be found in the Connecticut College Tent Use Policy.

The New London Fire Department also requires a permit whenever propane tanks are used at "public" events. A "public" event is defined as one that includes individuals who are not immediate members of the campus community (i.e., faculty, staff and students.). The permit application requires a $20.00 fee, payable at the time of the application. To begin the permit process, call the Fire Marshal's Office at (860) 447-5294. The Fire Inspector (Or Fire Marshal) will come to the site and inspect the propane tank(s), and sign off on the permit. Be sure to keep a copy of the completed (and approved) form for your records.

Note: Storage of flammable gases and liquids are prohibited in all residential halls. For this reason, students are not allowed to use or possess propane grills.

Lastly, Connecticut State Law requires that an announcement be made regarding evacuation procedures and the location of exits at the start of all events with more than 50 attendees. This includes functions held in tents. It is the responsibility of the individual in charge of the event to ensure that occupancy limits are adhered to, and that the following fire safety announcement is made at the beginning of the event.

"Connecticut State Fire Code requires that we point out the location of all emergency exits. The exits in this room/tent are located (point out exits). In the event of an emergency, please evacutate in an orderly manner through the nearest exit."
