Interlibrary Loan Tips & Frequently Asked Questions

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a free service offered to Connecticut College faculty, staff and students. The purpose of ILL is to obtain access to any desired materials for the College community.

We have developed partnerships with an extensive array of academic, public and special libraries to achieve the service goal of timely access to materials not within our collection. Please don’t hesitate to ask for anything you require.

Tips for ILL Users

  • You may place a request for anything you'd like and we will do our best to acquire it for you as quickly as possible. In the instance that we cannot obtain the item or article, you will receive an email from the ILL office.
  • If you need the item by a certain date, please include this in the notes section of the request form; we will do everything we can to provide timely access to the requested material.
  • ILL service is significantly faster if the ISSN or ISBN is included on the request.
  • Cite the material in full— the more information you include, the less likely you are to get the wrong item.
  • Check Shain's catalog, before placing an ILL request. Occasionally, we receive requests for articles or loans we already own.

Where do I pick up and return my ILL material?

You can pick up and return your ILL loans at the Shain Library Circulation Desk. Users may pick up ILL requests whenever the library is open. Visit the library’s web page for library hours.

How long can I keep an ILL loan for?

Due dates for ILL loans vary, but are viewable in your ILLiad account, and are always printed on the slip on the front of the loaned material.

Can I renew an ILL?

Usually, loans can be extended. One renewal is automatically requested for any loans still checked out approximately one week before their due date. If the supplying library grants a renewal, you will receive an email with the new due date. This is the final due date.

How long does it take for an ILL to arrive?

From the time you place the request, it takes approximately six days for an ILL loan to arrive and one day for an article request. If you need your material sooner than that, please make a note on the ILL request or contact the ILL office to expedite your request. You will receive an email when your materials are ready for pick up or have been delivered to your account.

Requests with an ISSN or ISBN number take significantly less time to arrive.

I need the book past the due date or renewal date. What should I do?

Contact the ILL office. They can try to obtain another copy of the material for you, and when the new material arrives you can return the one that is due.

I want to help someone place an interlibrary loan request. Anything I should know?

If you want the item on your account: Create the request as you would one of your own.

To create a request on your account and have it transferred to another user: create the request as you normally would, with two exceptions:

  • Do not include the IS*N
  • Note the patron’s name in the notes section

The patron who has the item on their account is responsible for any damage or replacement costs, even if it was intended for someone else.
