Facilities Management vs. Campus Planning

It’s important to understand the distinction between a maintenance request and a project request.

Facilities Management

Facilities Management is responsible for the ongoing operation, maintenance, and regulatory compliance of existing college infrastructure. Requests handled by Facilities Management include:

Operation

Daily services that support the functionality of the campus:

  • HVAC, lighting, water, and other utilities
  • Custodial services
  • Groundskeeping
  • Waste removal
  • Event setup and support

Preventive Maintenance

Routine tasks to prevent breakdowns and extend asset life:

  • Filter replacements
  • Lubrication of equipment
  • Seasonal servicing of HVAC systems
  • Fire alarm and life safety testing

Corrective Maintenance

Repairs needed when equipment or systems fail:

  • Fixing plumbing leaks
  • Replacing light bulbs
  • HVAC system repairs

Regulatory Compliance

Ensuring college facilities meet code and regulatory standards:

  • Fire code and life safety compliance
  • Elevator inspections
  • ADA accessibility standards
  • Hazardous materials management

Campus Planning

Requests involving changes or improvements to physical spaces fall under Campus Planning and must be submitted as Project Requests.

What Is a Project Request?

A Project Request is required for anything beyond regular maintenance or replacement. These projects often require design, budgeting, scheduling, and coordination.

Examples include:

  • Renovating or reconfiguring a room for new use
  • Installing new equipment requiring added infrastructure
  • Upgrading finishes like flooring or lighting beyond normal lifecycle replacement
  • Enhancing rooms for accessibility or new code requirements
  • Adding building systems (e.g., air conditioning to unconditioned spaces)

You can find our project request form, here.

For help determining how to categorize your request or for general guidance, please contact the Customer Service Center at (860) 439-2253 or workreq@conncoll.edu.
