The department of physics, astronomy and geophysics offers three different concentrations within the physics major. All programs of study begin with taking courses from the core requirements followed by the appropriate electives for each concentration.
To plan your course of study for Physics or Astrophysics, consult our course timing sheets (PDF).
In general, it is strongly recommended that students considering the physics major (all concentrations) start by following the course sequence outlined below:
First-year fall
PHY 109 and MAT 112 or 113. Calculus course selection is based on placement interviews conducted by the Department of Mathematics & Statistics during Orientation. For the astrophysics concentration, AST 105 is also recommended, particularly for students who place out of PHY 109 and/or MAT 112.
First-year spring
PHY 110 and MAT 113 (if not taken in the fall). For the astrophysics concentration, AST 110 is strongly recommended.
Sophomore fall
PHY 215 and either MAT 212 or MAT 225, depending on which courses are being offered the following spring. Astrophysics students should also take AST 105 if they did not take it during their first year. Students interested in pursuing, the dual-degree engineering program should take CHM 103.
Sophomore spring & beyond
PMost physics courses at the 200-level and above are offered alternate years, so it is important to consult with a physics faculty member to make sure that you are able to take all the courses you need. In planning your physics courses, please consult our page of projected course offerings.
