The Ammerman Center is a community of students, faculty, staff, artists, and scholars dedicated to exploring the dynamic relationships between the arts, technology, and culture through experimentation, research and creation.
The mission of the Ammerman Center is to inspire and foster the production of creative, scholarly, collaborative, and interdisciplinary work by offering innovative educational experiences such as courses, workshops, symposia, colloquia, internships, mentoring and advising.
Each year, the Center community produces innovative and engaging exhibitions, performances, publications, and public presentations.
The Center promotes Connecticut College’s core values of inclusivity, understanding and respect across economic, environmental, and cultural identities through the creative and scholarly connections made across campus, within New London, and throughout the world.
The Center’s mission proceeds from the understanding that theory and practice are inextricably linked, and that creative work and scholarship conducted side-by-side lead to rich, responsible, innovative, and often radical critical thinking, experimentation, and problem solving.
The Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology was officially incorporated in 1991 and is named for Connecticut College alumna and long-time trustee, Judith Ammerman Brielmaier `60, who made a generous contribution to endow the Center.
The Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology is the place at Connecticut College that gathers students and faculty together who study and contribute to the symbiotic relationship between technology and the arts. Through interdisciplinary collaborations and individual work, students and faculty not only promote proficiency in working with technology, but also deepen the understanding of the meaning and role of technology within the larger context of the liberal arts. Student scholars in the Center explore issues in arts/humanities and technology through individual study, course work, workshops and symposia with visiting scholars and artists, internships, research assistantships, and a certificate program that incorporates an intensive research project.
Students will develop the following skills:
Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of interdisciplinary areas of study within historical, social, and philosophical contexts
Apply critical terms and methodology from contemporary and classical studies across interdisciplinary fields of arts, technology, culture, and social responsibility
Develop technical skills and practices that enhance expression and communication
Create original work that integrates arts, culture, and technology
Communicate critically the process, creation, and context of works
Critique and synthesize creative works, especially those that integrate multiple mediums, tools, and approaches
Apply and uphold academic excellence and high community standards by practicing responsible citizenship
Utilize professional project management and planning skills
The Center offers intensive week-long technology workshops in rotating themes, which may include motion capture, physical computing, rapid prototyping, wearable electronics, bio-hacking, animation, flying robots (aka drones) and their uses, locative media/augmented reality media, hackathon-style challenges. Participation in the sophomore year workshop is required. The Center offers these workshops to our certificate students at no charge, including room and board, funded by the college.
