As a Slavic Studies major, you will gain a firm foundation in Russian language, history, literature, film, and contemporary culture, with opportunities to take courses cross-listed with Anthropology, Linguistics, Education, Jewish studies, Art History, Government, and Music. See full course listings and course descriptions in the college catalog.

Our Russian language program emphasizes active learning and incorporates community-based learning, study away, and regular practice outside of the classroom to bring students to advanced-level proficiency by their fourth year. When funds are available, Slavic Studies faculty include Travel, Research and Immersion Program (TRIP) components in their courses in order to take students to Russian-speaking countries during spring break.

Since 2008, Slavic studies students have been teaching Russian, Polish, Bulgarian and other languages of the region to fourth- and fifth-graders at the Regional Multicultural Magnet School in downtown New London.

Our students also have opportunities to:

  • study abroad and complete internships in Russophone countries
  • conduct research in Russian or another Slavic language for an honors thesis or senior independent project
  • travel to nearby cities to attend Russian and Ukrainian theater performances, opera, and other cultural events
  • apply for fellowships and scholarships that will deepen and build on their learning at Connecticut College
  • join an enthusiastic community of students and faculty who enjoy studying, learning, and traveling together!
