Most Slavic Studies majors study in a Russian-speaking country during their junior year, and many complete summer internships or intensive language study in Latvia, Georgia, Poland and other countries. The Slavic department partners with the School of Russian and Asian Studies (SRAS) which offers programs in nine locations throughout Eurasia and the Baltic countries. The department encourages shorter-term travel and research trips to Russophone countries. Over the past decade and a half, the department has led fully-funded, course-based TRIPs (Travel Research Immersion Programs) to Russia (in 2008, 2009, 2011, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2019), Georgia (2023) and Armenia (2024) for students taking the Elementary Russian sequence . In summer 2025, Slavic Studies organized a short-term study away program focusing on media and identity in the Baltics and based in Riga, Latvia. The department is working to offer a similar program, perhaps as a spring break TRIP, in the future.
