Facilities Management supports Connecticut College’s mission by providing sustainable and efficient stewardship of the campus environment in a manner that is respectful, collaborative and professional.

In partnership with Sasaki Associates, Connecticut College produced a Campus Master Plan to complement and support the College’s strategic plan, Building on Strength

What Facilities Does Not Manage: Department-Owned Equipment

Some equipment is considered department-owned, meaning it is funded, operated, and maintained by individual programs or administrative units. These items are typically movable, non-essential to the base operation of the building, or tied to specific program needs.

Examples by Program Area

Academic Programs
  • Laboratory equipment (centrifuges, spectrometers)
  • Smart boards, projectors, AV gear
  • 3D printers, CNC machines
  • Mobile furniture and department-specific seating
  • Departmental computers, printers, and server racks
  • Standalone specialty fume hoods

Athletic Programs

  • Weights, cardio machines, portable training tools
  • Sport-specific gear (goals, nets, mats)
  • Scoreboards and timing systems (unless infrastructure-integrated)
  • Portable bleachers, storage carts
  • Removable or sport-specific flooring
  • Athletic AV systems (team communications, video replay)

Dining Services

  • Cooking equipment (grills, ovens, fryers)
  • Cold storage (walk-ins, beverage stations)
  • Dishwashing and warewashing systems
  • Point-of-sale systems and digital menu boards
  • Smallwares and countertop appliances
  • Dining room furnishings (built-in or loose)

Arts Programs (Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Theater, Dance)

  • Easels, kilns, presses, looms
  • Cameras, lighting kits, sound gear
  • Editing software and digital tools
  • Stage lighting, audio boards, rigging trusses
  • Musical instruments and amps
  • Sprung floors and dance-specific overlays
  • Theater props, costumes, makeup stations

Responsibility Criteria

To help determine who is responsible for maintaining or replacing an item, consider the following:

Facilities Management is responsible if the item:

  • Is physically integrated into the building
  • Supports general building operations
  • Falls under capital asset management or code compliance
  • Requires specialized trades or regulatory oversight (e.g., elevators, HVAC, fire systems)

Departments are responsible if the item:

  • Is movable
  • Serves a specific program or department
  • Is funded by departmental budgets, grants, or external sources
  • Can be relocated or used elsewhere without changing building infrastructure

For any uncertainty about whether a particular item or request falls under Facilities Management or your department, contact the Customer Service Center at (860) 439-2253 or email workreq@conncoll.edu.
